IBM Power Systems management using GUI

IBM Management Console is capable of managing the IBM Power Series. The latest management console that is the 950 release is capable of managing Power 7, Power 8 and Power 9 servers.  Below we will be looking at IBM Power 9 System actions and operations that can be performed using the management console.

Management Console Action

Management console supports multiple operations on Power systems are Power off the IBM Power Server, Launch ASM Interface, view the AIX LPAR, PowerVM Servers, Enable Performance and Capacity Monitoring, Capture or Deploy the System Template (with or w/o IO). change Power system and Management console connection password and Power system Firmware Update.

Other Legacy Operations that management console supports are build the system plan, back up , restore and delete the partition profile data. Please caution here Deploy system Template and Restore partition data will alter the Power Systems partition and PowerVM partitions.


Processor and Memory


You can only view the Processor and Memory in the Power Systems page; you cannot alter any changes from this page. Page will list available processor, memory, and its utilization as provided in below snapshot.

Shared Processor Pool

Also you can divide the Power Systems processors into pools and assign them to the AIX LPAR from the pools. One AIX LPAR can have a processor allocated from only one IBM Power Processor Pool.

Shared Memory Pool

Power Systems have the option to leverage PowerVM disks as Memory (RAM) for AIX Logical Partition. To enable this you should have abundant disk on your PowerVM VIOS and create on Shared Memory Pool (Please note: A Power System can have only one shared memory pool).

To create one shared memory pool click on it, select the sizes, select the powervm vios, select the devices / disks list by clicking refresh button opt for disks that should be part of shared memory and then click create.

 

Network 

In Power Systems network page we have an option to create Shared Ethernet Adapter, Shared Ethernet Adapter is the bridge between the IBM Power Systems internal network to the external network. We have an option to create Ether channel (Link Aggregation) as well on the Power systems network page, to create the link aggregation we need two Physical Adapter having the same Port VLAN addresses.

vNIC / SR IOV Hardware Virtualized IO

In the vNIC page of Power System you can only view the vNIC adapters and its statistics so nothing much can be modified or adapter can be added here, only option is to view. In Hardware Virtualized IO the SR IOV you can convert the adapter from dedicated to Shared. When the SRIOV adapters gets shared we can create Logical SRIOV Adapters and distribute the capacity / bandwidth  of single SRIOV adapter in to smaller numbers.

Storage 

In the systems view of storage PowerVM feature allows you to view and modify the VIOS adapters and disks, the VIOS disks are virtual disks, rootvg storage disks, physical volumes, optical disks and virtual fibre channel adapters assigned from PowerVM to AIX logical partitions.

Capacity on Demand (COD)

COD is the PowerVM Licensing Functionality it enables to increase the processor and memory capacity when there is demand and when there is more supply we can reduce the processor and memory to normal level

Serviceability

When the power system needs to be maintained you will raise the serviceability event and system admin will address the event and take action as required to maintain the power system. The Serviceability option provides console admin to create, repair, call home and close the event.

Topology

Topology is the graphical representation of Network and Storage that are getting assigned to IBM AIX Operating System from the PowerVM VIOS. As we know PowerVM is used for virtualization of I/O so the network adapters and storage storage adapters that gets assigned to AIX partition will be represented in pictorial.
