What is Shared Ethernet Adapter (SEA) in VIOS ?

Answer :

Shared Ethernet Adapter is a virtual adapter that creates a Bridge between your Physical and Virtual Adapter. The main goal of this bridge creation is to move the internet traffic to other virtual adapters that are added to AIX LPAR's from the VIOS.

To list down the SEA in VIOS we use below commands

# lsdev | grep ent
ent0         Available 03-00       4-Port Gigabit Ethernet PCI-Express Adapter
ent1         Available 03-01       4-Port Gigabit Ethernet PCI-Express Adapter
ent2         Available 03-02       4-Port Gigabit Ethernet PCI-Express Adapter
ent3         Available 03-03       4-Port Gigabit Ethernet PCI-Express Adapter
ent4         Available             Virtual I/O Ethernet Adapter (l-lan)
ent5         Available             Shared Ethernet Adapter

# lsattr -El ent5 | grep -i ent
real_adapter    ent0     Physical adapter associated with the SEA
virt_adapters   ent4     List of virtual adapters associated with the SEA (comma separated)

Where ent0 is real Physical adapter and ent4 is the virtual adapter and ent5 is SEA bridge created between ent0 and ent4
