How to troubleshoot Jumbo Frame is working in AIX ?

Answer :

Any packet will be refereed as Jumbo Frame if it has a payload of more than 1500 bytes. To troubleshoot Jumbo Frame in AIX below are the steps

Step 1 : Set mtu size of virtual ethernet adapter to 9000 using below command line

# lsattr -El en221 | grep mtu
mtu           1500          Maximum IP Packet Size for This Device
mtu_bypass    on            Enable/Disable largesend for virtual Ethernet
#
# chdev -l en221 -a mtu=9000
en221 changed
#
# lsattr -El en221 | grep mtu
mtu           9000          Maximum IP Packet Size for This Device        True
mtu_bypass    on            Enable/Disable largesend for virtual Ethernet True
#

Step 2 : Check netstat -in mtu size value
# netstat -in
Name   Mtu
en221    9000
en221    9000
#

Step 3 : Perform ping test by sending the 8000 bytes of packets
Success scenario where Jumbo Frame is enabled in network switch
# ping -D -s 8000 target
2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0% packet loss

Failure scenario where Jumbo Frame is not enabled in network switch
# ping -D -s 8000 target
4 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

If failed to ping either ask network admin to configure Jumbo Frame on network switch else configure AIX LPAR SEA to enable Jumbo Frame or make sure target ip should also be having Jumbo Frame configured else it will fail.
