How to perform SEA Failover by VIOS reboot ?

Answer :

SEA when fail over is enabled it will fail over to another VIOS when ever one of the VIOS detects network cabling issue, network link error, due to maintenance, processor deadlock and memory over consumption.

One of the SEA fail over can be because VIOS reboot. To perform configure the SEA in fail over mode between two VIOS.

Reboot the PRIMARY vios1 as given below

# lsdev | grep -i shared
entX         Available             Shared Ethernet Adapter

# entstat -d entX | grep -i state

    State: PRIMARY
LAN State: Operational
LAN State: Operational

# reboot
Rebooting . . .

In the BACKUP vios2 the SEA fail over takes place and the SEA state will transit from BACKUP to PRIMARY

# lsdev | grep -i Shared
entY         Available             Shared Ethernet Adapter

# entstat -d entY | grep -i state

    State: BACKUP
LAN State: Operational
LAN State: Operational

# entstat -d entY | grep -i state

    State: PRIMARY
LAN State: Operational
LAN State: Operational

After 2 minutes when vios1 is up the SEA takes over PRIMARY position and vios2 SEA will take BACKUP (its refereed as Fail back)

 # entstat -d entX | grep -i state

    State: PRIMARY
LAN State: Operational
LAN State: Operational

# entstat -d entY | grep -i state

    State: BACKUP
LAN State: Operational
LAN State: Operational

entX is vios1 SEA adapter and entY is vios2 SEA adapter.
